What is your website URL?

Where is your business based?
Irvine, CA
What is your name? (We prefer your full first and last name but you can use either, or even a nick-name.)
Kelly Blokdijk | Creating a VOICE for talent
Describe your business (product, service, quirky things you want to include, etc.)
TalentTalks provides specialized career services support for individuals and groups, enabling natural talent and potential to bloom, blossom and flourish. We believe that your personal and professional brand is a priceless commodity to be marketed effectively. Partnering with us will help you maximize your career success.

Human Resource and Organization Development consulting is also a specialty of TalentTalks. Who is your customer?
Job Seekers, Business Owners/Executives, anyone with Talent!
How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After many years in the Human Resources field, I felt the need to use my expertise in a more meaningful and personalized way. I've always enjoyed helping others with their careers and have been repeatedly complimented on my communication and writing abilities, so this was a natural transition to leverage both concepts into a business model.
How long have you been in business?
Unofficially since the early '90's. Officially since March 2009.
What's been your greatest moment so far? (i.e. Signing your first client, getting the big order, some great PR?)
Happy and satisfied clients that I helped free of charge. Some were complete strangers that were referred to me... My hope is that by serving those in need, my efforts will create and build a solid reputation and deliver positive "career karma" back to me!
What was your biggest mistake?
Not so much a mistake, but being too eager to get my website up and running caused some complications. I realized that the simple solutions are not quite up to my high standards and it ended up creating more work than I expected to establish an online presence that I could be proud of...
What was your smartest move?
Networking with those I already know and trust. I have a tremendous group of supporters wishing me well and giving encouragement for my business to take off and succeed.
What are your business plans? (i.e. Expansion, franchising, selling for a gazillion dollars?)
Very basic, home-based, doing what comes naturally and hoping to earn a steady income. At this point, my offical business plan is still under construction, but expected to be completed in the next few weeks. I appreciate the value of structure and goals, so having a plan will help cement a relevant framework to sustain my business model.
Are you a member of any OC-based associations, networking groups, etc?
Many industry groups in the HR field. With my new independent venture, I hope to join many more and become more visible in the community and network with like-minded professional individuals. I also would welcome the opportunity to provide my services to non-profit organizations serving disadvantaged members of our community.
Are you willing to answer questions about your business from other small business owners?
Yes

Haunted by nightmarish resumes and cover letters?

Trick or Treat? Job Seekers often inadvertently haunt prospective employers with nightmarish resumes, cover letters and online profiles. Here are few Halloween-themed reminders of how to come out of the shadows and put some life back into a ghostly professional brand or ghastly career-marketing documents.

 Beware of vague, unfocused and costumed communication which fails to align and emphasize buzz-words connected with the target opportunity or audienc… Continue

Why "Branding" Isn't Just Another Trendy Buzz Word

It’s probably rare to encounter anyone who will admit to intentionally watching television commercials and taking notice of newspaper or magazine ads. A rather geeky trait I suppose, but I’ve always found the concept of advertising, marketing and branding quite intriguing. Having no comprehension of football and minimal interest in understanding the sport, my only reason to watch the Super Bowl is for the highly anticipated debut of all of the creative commercials. And, of course the half-time e… Continue

Don’t get “ism’d” away from your goals!

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t continue hearing about society’s ills defined by terms ending in “ism.” Those being, ageism, racism, classism, sexism, and any other “ism’s” used to label discriminatory behavior. Sure there are plenty of laws attempting to prevent problems from arising due to stereotyping, but it can be very subtle and subjective personal attitudes that slip by. Perhaps these will always be around to some extent, but perpetuating them through one’s own negative self-concept is cer… Continue

TMI, advice, opinions & other confusion for job seekers

These days, there may seem to be a shortage of jobs, but absolutely no shortage of information on how to get one! Recently, I’ve noticed an influx of experts touting all sorts of solutions for job seekers. Various sources of advice label themselves with clever and mysterious sounding titles such as maven, guru, evangelist, and so on…

What stands out is how abundant and contradictory all of their information has become. The phrase “TMI” comes to mind for when you cringe while hearing something u… Continue
